Two students studying in Cornwall have spent two weeks gaining invaluable insights into foaling as part of their work experience at a national stud farm.

Duchy College students Emily Mettam, from Bude, and Jordan Pogson, from Plymouth, stayed onsite at The National Stud on the outskirts of Newmarket, the internationally renowned facility.

It was all go during foaling season, so the pair’s flat had foaling cameras installed so they could monitor the mares and see when they were showing signs of foaling.

They were fortunate enough to have five foals born and were able to assist in the foaling process.

“We are very grateful for the experience, we have had an amazing time, being able to assist in the foaling process has certainly sparked my interest in a career in this area,” Emily said.

They also had a chance to check the confirmation of the foals and were allowed to watch the vet perform different procedures.

There was also a trip to Durley Stud where the students watched different coverings of mares and saw the most expensive stallion there, whose fee to cover costs £250,000.

“Following on from this experience I have been offered a job to assist in preparing the yearlings for the yearling sales,” Jordan explained. “I am very excited to start my new job.”

Team Lead for Equine, Alison Abbey said the work experience positions offered to the Level 3 second year FE students resulted in “an exceptional educational experience”.

“It was something that will always be with them and has helped to shape their career decisions,” she added.
