South West Farmer shares news and views on farming throughout the region and we’re increasingly using social media to hear directly from farmers and readers.

Here are just some of what’s been said recently on our social media. We posted a news piece in which the National Sheep Association (NSA) warns of a link between upland rewilding and devastating wildfires.

We wrote: “Controversial opinion from @natsheep here - blaming rewilding for the fire raging at Saddlesworth. What are your thoughts?”

Mark Barrett responded on Facebook: “I can’t help agreeing with the NSA's concerns. "Re-wilding" seems in many cases to be a cop out, shirking the responsibility of proper land management?”

While the NSA clarified: “We are not saying rewilding is to blame entirely for this terrible fire, merely pointing out that rewilding increases the risk of similar blazes happening!”

On Twitter the early harvests have been much talked about and shown.

Exe Valley Lamb tagged South West Farmer in a great photo of harvesting, writing: “Lovely evening to be cutting. @SouthWestFarmer #harvest2018 #harvestsky #devon #exeter #exminster #farming #JohnDeere”. The photo received lots of supportive and happy comments from our followers.

Also on Twitter we’ve had some strong reactions to the news we post about food production. About industrial-scale beef farming coming to the UK @PorshamFarm wrote: “Supermarket demand or uneducated consumer, who wants cheap meat? If the supermarkets don’t stock this trash then the consumer will have to pay a more realistic price based on usual good animal welfare we have here.”

We would love to join the debate. Farming can be lovely but our social media channels never are! Share your photos, videos, opinions and thoughts with us. Tell us about the trials and tribulations of farming in the torrential and cold spring, the hot, dry summer, how the animals are coping, how the crops are doing and what you’re doing.

It’s a way to keep showing people what has to happen to make their food. It’s Open Farm Sunday but seven days a week, without lots of people arriving on the farm.

We’re exceptionally proud of the farmers in our region and want to showcase your dedication, hard work and expertise in producing food and caring for the environment.
