This Wool Week 'The Woolly Roadshow' comes to Exeter on Thursday October 12 to promote British wool, British sheep and the Rare Breeds Survival Trust (RBST).
There will be members of the RBST, National Sheep Association and British Wool producers plus a display of native sheep breeds local the region together with hand-spinning and felting demonstrations.
David and Karen Griffiths are taking the roadshow around the UK for seven days. The couple keep sheep including Blue Face Leicester, Wensleydale, Lincoln Longwool, Shropshire, Shetland, Hebridean, Romney, Derbyshire Gritstone and Est a Laine Merino. They also run their own mini woollen mill.
The Woolly Roadshow incorporates a display of woollen yarn, carded fibres, knitwear, woven items and other products made from wool, an audio video display showing lambing, shearing and wool processing. Exeter was chosen to host the roadshow as it was the centre for the woollen trade in the south west and at its height had at least three purpose built cloth markets in the city. The first market opened in 1538 by Henry Hamlyn, the Mayor who established a weekly market for fleece, yarn and kersey (a type of coarse cloth).
