Existing, new and future farm business energy solutions were the topic of a recent OMSCo (Organic Milk Suppliers Cooperative) farm meeting, leaving attendees optimistic about the future of energy choices.

Discussing the wide range of farm energy solutions available, Ian O Reilly, Gazegill Organics, OMSCo member and host of the farm walk says he believes farmers have many energy options available to them which can be utilised to have a positive impact on farm profitability and the environment.

“The key to success is planning ahead; knowing your current requirements and future demands. As an OMSCo member, I practice organic farming and have the motivation to ensure our farm is as environmentally friendly as possible. But, for my business, due to advances in technology it’s also economically viable.

David Travis, from Cleanpower Solutions agrees with Ian. “The technology, and understanding of energy systems, has improved significantly over the last few years. There are many exciting options now commercially viable.

“We’re now seeing storage systems become available, so that power is available to your site when renewable energy is not being produced,” he says. “This is a major advancement in the utilisation of alternative energy systems.

“Hydrogen is also proving to show great potential for the future. We’re now trialling pickup trucks that operate with dual fuel; diesel and hydrogen. Early indications are this will be a safe, sustainable and a very practical option for the near future.

Generating at source is the future, David believes. “The North West, in particular, offers huge potential for hydro power. This is an exceptionally efficient way to generate power, and the industry is looking at ways in which utilise this much more effectively.

“SMART energy is also in a period of immense growth. For dairy farmers, who have big demands for hot water, it may offer noticeable savings by simply using the energy supply in a more efficient way.

Bill Tyrer from Dalliam adds that installing any energy system is all about selecting the best system for your farm. “Design is paramount, and SMART technology now offers huge cost benefits.

“For farm use, heat pumps are a fantastic option. This is a proven technology, and offers eenergy savings of over 30%.

“I would recommend any farmer to talk to a specialist and discuss their needs. Real savings can be made, while reducing our dependence on fossil fuels and the emissions burning them entails,” he concludes.
