Haldon Ladies Tug of War team are celebrating after coming third at the National Federation of Young Farmers Club finals, when they represented Devon at Tenbury Show in Worcestershire.

The team is made up of members from Bow, Newton St Cyres and Chagford including Emma Davie, Georgia Woodman, Alice Palfrey, Georgina Davie, Sophie Down, Lucy Thomas, Jess Palfrey and Alice Giles pulled against eight other teams in the first heat, winning four outright, three draws and losing just one.

The team met Worcestershire YFC in the semi-finals, where they lost 2-0, but went onto win both ends against Pembrokeshire YFC, placing them third out of nine.

Club captain Emma Davie said; "The team has worked really hard at training sessions twice a week to get to a high level of fitness and strength for these competitions. It is great to have support from the Haldon men's team who have also had a successful season, with their highlight being the National Outdoor tug of war championships in June'.

The road to the team's tug of war success was down to training twice a week with coach Michael Smerdon who also competes with the Widecombe tug of war club.

The ladies' team recently won the Devon Championships in June and the Far Western Area Open Championships in August both of which were hosted by the tug of war association. Alongside these competitions, the team also competes in the Friday night league where they are currently in first place.

The team will be competing at Widecombe Fair on Tuesday September 8, which will be their last competition of the season. Anyone interested in joining Haldon tug of war team contact Emma Davie on 07835 253760.
