The Devon County Agricultural Association, organisers of the Devon County Show, the county’s largest annual event, is gearing up for a double celebration this year.

2014 heralds the 119th County Show held on May 22-24 and it is 25 years since the DCAA took ownership of the Westpoint showground, which is home to the County Show and its wholly owned subsidiary company - Westpoint Centre (Devon).

1. This is the 119th Show - the first was held in 1872. The reason why the number and dates don’t tally is that if you take out the years of the two World Wars, and the years in which the Devon County Show combined with other agricultural shows, such as the Royal Bath and West, then 2014 sees the 119th and not the 142nd Show.

2. Around 95,000 visitors are expected to visit during the three days of the Show.

3. The Kangaroo Kids - Australian stunt men Matt Coulter and his son Sam, will be providing a thrilling ‘dare devil’ display of quad bike aerobatics.

4. Savage Skills return with demonstrations which cement their position as the UK’s leading freestyle mountain bike stunt team.

5. The Show is worth around £10 million to the local economy according to economist Kevin Butler.

6. The Show layout covers 93 acres and the car parks take approximately 30,000 cars during the three Show days, making those fields the largest car park in the county!

7. This year sees the launch of a new Show website specially designed for users of mobile phones and tablets.

8. It takes an eight-strong team of marquee contractors a total of four weeks to build the majority of the large marquees at the Show and only two weeks to take it all down again! The equipment they use would cover four full size football pitches!

9. The ‘Show kit list’ includes circa 200 stables, 600 cattle stalls, 150 pig pens and more than 800 sheep pens ready for our ‘four-legged stars’ to strut their stuff.

10. Westpoint Hall is transformed into Devon’s largest temporary cattle building housing up to 600 beef and dairy cattle with nearly 20 breeds on display.

11. The showground also becomes a home for more than 1,400 sheep, 1,000 horses, hundreds of goats, alpacas, guinea pigs, rabbits, pigeons, dogs and poultry.

12. New for this year are the Devon Farm Business Awards being organised in conjunction with leading farming charity the Addington Fund and award-winning South West lawyers Stephens Scown LLP.

13. More than 150 road signs are erected along the county’s roads.

14. Hi Ho Silver! is this year’s Show beer and is being brewed by Country Life Brewery at Abbotsham, near Bideford.

15. Ales from Devon pull around 7,500 pints of traditional local beer and 2,500 pints of cider.

16. The Texel Sheep Society is celebrate 40 years and will be bringing their southern show to Devon. 17. Circa 750 trade stands will be offering everything from tractors, machinery, and cars to garden features, cookery recipes, clothing and homeware.

18. The Country Life and Woodland Areas provide something for anyone with an interest in the countryside including rural industries and crafts, as well as plenty of hands-on opportunities to try a new pursuit.

19. If you are looking for a bit of peace and tranquillity within the razzmatazz of the Show, take a stroll through the beautiful Bluebell Wood or our Woodland Walks which are managed by students from Bicton College at East Budleigh.

20. For the more traditional Showgoer, step back in time in the steam engines and vintage tractor features, or why not walk around the Classic Car feature?

21. The Show is hosting the first World Fruit & Veg Bowls Championships!

22. A new attraction in the food and drink marquee will be demonstrations provided by local butchers who will show how one large joint can be transformed into numerous family meals.

23. Spend time looking at the wonderful pieces of metalwork designs or go next door and watch the art of farriery.

24. Local lace makers, spinners, weavers and dyers will be giving demonstrations every day in the Westcountry Crafts and ‘Love Local’ pavilion.

25. Tens of thousands of honeybees will be on display behind protective glass in the popular Bees & Honey feature.
