NFU claim huge boost in membership
The NFU is claiming a massive growth in membership numbers during its centenary year.
New figures have revealed there are now in excess of 55,000 farmer and grower members - an increase of 730 on last year. The statistics confirm that the NFU, named Trade Association of the Year 2008, continues to be a respected voice for the agriculture industry supporting the needs of its members locally, nationally and internationally.
NFU head of membership Huw Hilditch-Roberts said the NFU was doing great work on behalf of its members.
"No other farming organization has the depth of expertise or contacts of the NFU. Through its offices at Stoneleigh, London and Brussels, and throughout the regions, the NFU influences decision-making and legislation at the very highest level, day in, day out," said Mr Hilditch-Roberts, but added that there were many non-members benefitting from the work done by the NFU on behalf of the farming industry who were not prepared to join the organisation and make it even stronger.
"The growth in membership numbers is very encouraging but it's hugely frustrating that so many farmers and growers feel as if they can freeload on the back of the NFU. We are asking those people to come and join us.
"There are so many reasons to become a member of the NFU but our greatest strength is unity as we represent all sectors of the industry. We will continue to speak up on behalf of our members with passion and power to show that farming can play a key role in the country's future.
"There are a number of challenges facing the industry and the NFU is in good shape to meet them head-on with a clear sense of direction, strong leadership and a sound financial base. I am calling for all members to encourage their farming friends and neighbours to join up today."
In response to the growing membership numbers, the NFU continues to roll-out its highly successful series of support services offering farmers and growers help on various issues including planning, taxation, marketing and food promotion.
