Imagine driving around the corner and being confronted with 140 sheep. This was the unusual sight facing anyone travelling between St Martin and Newtown yesterday.

Although the occasional escaped sheep or two is nothing unusual in Cornwall, particularly in rural areas such as on the Lizard Peninsula, the volume of ewes was still something of an eye opener.

They were being moved between fields by farmers Steven and Diana Worden, from Polkerth Farm, who last month made headlines when one of their ewes gave birth to quintuplet lambs – beating estimated odds of one in 10,000.

Posting the video on Facebook, Diana said: “The day we became true sheep farmers, walking 140 ewes through the village!”

The ewes were chaperoned by two quadbikes behind, directing them along the quiet road.

There was lots of support from people, with one writing: “The way it was done, lovely to see.”

Another person said: “This is the best thing I have seen in a very long time!”
