A new Bovine TB Eradication Advisory Group for England (TBEAG) has been formed to help to develop a long-term strategy to stop the spread of Bovine TB and move towards its eradication.
Welcoming the announcement of the new group, EU Agriculture Spokesman Julie Girling said: “Cattle farms are vital to the economy of the South West and of the UK.
“Bovine TB is a serious challenge to our farmers and a serious issue for our economy.
“TBEAG must consider comprehensive and evidence-based measures to halt the spread of this disease and to help support the livelihoods of our farmers.
“I will support this group where appropriate and assist in the development of the UK's EU-funded Eradication Plan. It is vital TBEAG engage regularly with the farming industry, veterinary profession and wider stakeholders.”
The new group will be a subgroup of the Animal Health and Welfare Board for England. The board brings together independent experts from outside Government with the Chief Veterinary Officer and civil servants, to make direct recommendations to ministers on strategic policy affecting the health and welfare of kept animals such as farm animals, horses and pets.
The new group will hold its first meeting in July under the Chairmanship of John Cross, current Chairman of the English Beef and Lamb Sector Body (EBLEX).
