It appears the planned UK badger cull is to be delayed for a year after another Government u-turn.

Environment Secretary Owen Paterson is expected to make the announcement in the House of Commons this morning.

A licence had been issued for the first test cull - due to take place in Gloucestershire - but that permission is set to be revoked.

The decision to place the cull on hold follows a public outcry against the policy, including a petition led by musician Brian May which gathered more than 150,000 signatures.

Fears had also been raised over the costs of the scheme, after it was revealed numbers of badgers in the test zones were far higher than previously estimated.

Farmers have been campaigning for the cull to help fight the spread of bovine TB, which led to the slaughter of 26,000 cattle at a cost of £90 million last year alone.
